What is Judo?

Judo is a sport, a discipline, a fitness program, an art, and a means of self-defense.  It was created by Dr. Jigoro Kano in 1882 and has been an Olympic sport since 1964.

Judo is the compilation of spectacular throwing techniques and ground grappling utilizing specific pins, control holds, and submission techniques.

Judo develops self-confidence, concentration, and leadership skills. It emphasizes safety and develops high-level conditioning and fitness training. Judo is also a unique sport that allows almost anybody to participate no matter his or her age, gender, or physical limitations.

Why Judo?

· Fitness: Judo is more than a gym membership. It’s a creative and fun fitness program that teaches coordination, focus, and discipline through Judo techniques and etiquette.

· Self Defense: Judo is an excellent way to learn how to protect and defend yourself in a real life situation.

· Self Development: Judo teaches practitioners to be active and productive members of society. Judo builds character through teaching leadership skills, self-confidence, and mental strength.

We found Shojin when our nephew began kids judo classes there. We enrolled our daughter and could not have been more impressed with the caring environment and family feel of the dojo. Sensei Neil Simon is a one in a million find. His expertise and passion for the martial arts is immediately obvious and his instruction style and demeanor with young children and Judo players of all ages with special needs is just amazing. He’s also just a nice guy to sit and chat with. All the instructors and participants we met there have been so welcoming and kind. Our daughter attended from 4 1/2 years old until almost 10. The dojo has undergone such improvement to the interior space during our time there and is so beautiful. It is certainly a space to be proud to train in. The skills and principles our daughter learned there are applicable in so many other areas of life. She chose to discontinue her study of Judo, but the fundamentals and fond memories will be with her always.

Tried out a class and learned so much in so little time. Such a wonderful group to work with. The instructors and students are very friendly and knowledgeable. They push you to learn and challenge yourself while being very encouraging. Watched the kids classes and saw how the warm up built was very exercise heavy and the techniques portion was application focused. The kids were smiling and clearly learning some cool techniques. Strongly recommend checking out this dojo if you're looking for a great group of people to train with and want to learn a lot.

I LOVE Judo. Sensei Neil is an amazing instructor, and the higher belts are very nice and helpful. Class is intense, but super fun. The atmosphere is very conducive to learning, and I feel like I am making a bunch of new friends.

Shojin is a great dojo and I would recommend it to anyone! I have been practicing Judo here for the past three years and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Sensei Simon and Sensei Nabil have years of experience as Judo competitors, referees, and educators - and they are exceptional teachers. I have seen tremendous improvements in myself and in the other members of Shojin - people who are now like my family. We are a diverse group of people - the dojo is very safe, inclusive, and respectful - and all are welcome. Judo is a martial art, a sport, a way of being and is incredibly fun. It is also a great workout. If you are at all curious about Judo come by and give it a try.

My friend, Nick, invited me to check out Shojin Judo, his home dojo, back in 2012. I must admit that I was skeptical at first. I was, however, impressed by the level of hands on teaching, team-work, and intense exercise. Had I not moved out of state, I would have likely called Shojin Judo my home dojo. It's a gem.
