What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting (newaza) fundamentals that were taught by a number of individuals including Takeo Yano, Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake. Brazilian jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of judo through Carlos and Hélio Gracie (who passed their knowledge on to their extended family) as well as other instructors who were students of Maeda, such as Luiz Franca. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling") and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system. Since its inception in 1882, its parent art of judo was separated from older systems of Japanese Jujutsu by an important difference that was passed on to Brazilian jiu-jitsu: it is not solely a martial art, it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a way (Do) of life. Awesome BJJ gym. Started 2 months ago with zero experience and I’m hooked. Charlie is great, everybody is nice and helpful…looking forward to growing here!

Charlie is a great instructor and is really building a great team over at Vision FH. I consider my teammates and Charlie some of my very best friends and Charlie has done a great job improving everyone's skill, confidence and physical fitness. A great place to feel at home and learn from one of Michigan's best black belts whether you're an experienced martial artist or brand new to training

So far it’s been an awesome first time experience into martial arts. I’m taking the adult BJJ classes and everyone in class has been so nice and supportive. Charlie the instructor is really experienced and is good at guiding me even though I’m a bit slow to catch on. + Good location and facility

My friend made me do a free trial class and we both decided to sign up that day. It’s been almost 2 years and I haven’t looked back. Jiu jitsu has become such a positive aspect of my life and my Vision team has given me more support and great friendships than I could have hoped for. Charlie is a great teacher and is able to provide each student with what they need to learn and succeed. Come check us out and see what you can really do!
